ANNUAL CLUB AWARDS

Annual club awards are presented to members for services and performances throughout the wider club.

Club Person of the Year - The Nottle Trophy
The Club Person of the Year are those members deemed by the Committee to have made the most outstanding contributions in a calendar year to the community of the club - be they directly in football, netball, affiliated sports, administration or to the club generally. The trophy is named after the famous Nottle family, who over three generations have been pre-eminent footballers, coaches and administrators right up to the 1980s. The original Nottle boys, Charlie, Dick, George, Tom, Len and Bevan all taught themselves to play football with each other using a stocking stuffed with straw and joined South from 1912. Indeed, in one A Grade match against Salisbury during the 1920s, five of the brothers played in the team and South's tally of fourteen goals were all kicked by Nottles. Charlie and George in particular were great champions and longserving administrators. George's sons John and Brenton also became two of our greatest champions for South during the 1950s and 60s before excellent coaching tenures, while John's son Chris also played top footy.

Club Player of the Year - The Perpetual Max V. Heinrich Memorial Trophy
The Club Player of the Year is awarded to a currently-listed footballer - regardless of grade - deemed by the Committee to have made the most outstanding contribution to the football culture of the club. Many players perceive this award as prestigious as a Best and Fairest trophy or Life Membership because it refers not only to exceptional performance but also to being a true club man. Max Heinrich was a champion player and head trainer from the late 1950s before prematurely passing away in 1988. On-field he was a rugged and intimidating opponent, but off-field he was the quintessential gentleman, described as "personifying" the SGFC. His legendary work ethic, dedication and expertise in sports medicine is now deeply revered and etched into the club psyche. Max was honoured with life membership of the GDFL and a national merit for his services to Australian football, while today South and Willaston continue to contest the Heinrich-McGahan Cup each local derby. As with Life Membership, the prestigious Heinrich trophy is presented at the discretion of the Committee and therefore is not necessarily awarded every year.

Junior Club Person of the Year - The Irvin Sutton Memorial Trophy
The Junior Club Person of the Year is the youth equivalent of the adult award - presented to a junior member who has made the most outstanding contribution to the club over a given year. As a young person, to embrace the club spirit and participate in the organisation is a rare quality which echoes the very sentiment of our founder James Fitzgerald. This trophy bears the name of Irvin Sutton, younger brother of Halby, who was quite a colourful character and loyal supporter of colts football. Irvin came from a very South family but was never actually able to put the boots on himself due to a disability - which most likely contributed to his untimely demise. Nevertheless, Irvin loved South with a fierce parochialism and was always prepared to sell raffle tickets or man the scoreboard.

The Garry Hurst Rookie of the Year
As always, Garry Hurst - one of the most charismatic leaders of the club, put his money where his mouth is in 1987 and inaugurated a trophy to help encourage young footballers to continue on with their footy from the junior grades into a senior career. A dedicated trainer, worldly administrator and great personality in his own right, this Life Member has been a cornerstone of the modern SGFC. A prominent businessman and community leader, his committment and passion for the club is evident in his long and generous service. The Rookie of the Year has since been presented to the most outstanding new player to a senior rank.

Club Goalkicking - The J.L.P. O'Reilly Memorial Trophy
Most recently, the O'Reilly Trophy has been presented to a player - regardless of grade - who has achieved the highest aggregate of goals in a given football year throughout the entire club. Les (Grumpy) O'Reilly, father of Kym, Phil, Terry and Grant, was an elder statesman for the SGFC during the 60s and 70s as secretary and chairman. He also helped out regularly as an official on gameday while his sons and grandsons suited up. The patriach of a very famous South family, Grumpy was a familiar icon who led us through our most successful era in modern times.
