LITTLE LEAGUE - UNDER 13
The great Doug Harrison initiated
the Gawler and District Mini League amongst the local
primary schools around the Gawler district in the early
1970s - encompassing a modified rules (non-competitive
and non-contact) programme for junior primary kids,
through to an upper primary level. This had basically acted as a precursor to club footy
of the BLGFA Junior Colts.
By 2007, many of the primary schools struggled to find the resources and indemnity to continue organising and administering footy for primary school kids. With the success of the Auskick programs held at the local clubs (particularly South), junior football would change forever when the clubs finally took it over all together following the establishment of a Modifieds and Little League competition in the BLGFA.
South Gawler launched its new Junior Program with a well attended ‘muster day’ at the rooms on Sunday April 3, 2007. The day was organised by the club's hardworking colts committee who were a major reason behind the success of South Gawler's junior program over the past few years. Central Districts recognised the importance of the day by sending players Daniel Capagreco and Brodie Hudson as their representatives. Brodie - who made his SANFL League debut in 2006, was himself a product of South Gawler and was a member of South Gawler's 2001 Under 15 Premiership team along with 2006 AFL Premiership player Sam Butler of the West Coast Eagles.
With the club taking responsibility for primary school aged football from this season, the club's management structure increased with the inclusion of a Junior Football Manager reflecting the importance of junior football at South Gawler. The inaugural manager, Peter Reichstein, confirmed that Jim Callander and Michael Menadue were to be the first coaches of South Gawler's first Little League team.
The start of the 2007 Little League season against traditional rival the Donnybrooks was a good day with the South Gawler Modified and Little League teams finally running out after so many years of hard work. They looked great and played even better with both teams recording wins in front of large crowds including senior coach Damien Herzick, Football Ambassador Churchy Schultz and Life Member Dave Ellis.
Let history record the Little League's first captain and best player was Justin Mackereth, and the first goal was kicked by Michael Cash.
